From the ancient time, Mongolians have had great traditions that prohibit putting dirty things in the river. But today did we forget these old traditions kept over hundreds of years?
It has become normal to throw litters into the rivers as if they are trash bins. Selenge river almost disappeared, we can only see very narrow stream there where lots of litters including wastes from the hospitals and construction sites.
The elderly people who have been living near by the river for long time say that "it seems not long ago when the water level of the river reached to our waist".
THE RIVER GOT RID OF EVEN LITTLE BIT OF ITS GARBAGE
On 18 July, 2009 , the one day public work to pick up the litters laying around Selenge river was organized by Mongolian Environmental Citizen's Council, Green World team from Global Leadership and Labor Welfare Service together. 20 people were involved in this public work to clean up the garbage of 1,5 km square area along the river, consist of students and unemployed citizens looking for job and registered at Labor and Welfare Service. Selenge river got rid of even little bit of its garbage.
NEVER FORGET THAT WATER IS LIVE!
