Which Is More Destructive – Human Beings or Pest Insects?

Nowadays, in the field of biology, scientists say about 2 million species exist in the world. Human beings constitute just one of those species. By the same token, pest insects are also living beings constituting several other species. The butterfly is one well known species which people love. This may surprise you but your favorite butterfly has been contributing to the loss of millions and millions of tons of drinking water as well as trillions and trillions of kilograms of air for breathing. However, ultimately it is human beings who are responsible for having established this situation.
pest insects of Bogdkhan mountain
The map above shows how pest insects are distributed throughout the strictly protected area of Bogd Khan Mountain located south of the city of Ulaanbaatar. There are two genus of butterfly and one genus of beetle which have been identified as pest insects. During the last seven years these insects have destroyed 29,000 square hectares of forest land in Mongolia containing 20,300,000 trees. Scientific inspection has revealed that one tree’s root system contains about 40,000 liters of water. Supposing the average Mongolian nomad’s tent uses 30 liters of water per day, one tree would contain enough water to last three to four years. Therefore, multiplying this by 20,300,000 it represents 812,000,000,000 liters of water – or enough water to last the entire city of Ulaanbaatar for four to five years! In other words, pests have already destroyed that much drinking water.

Benefits of forestation are not limited only to water. Forests also improve air quality and climate comfort as well as protecting from dust and desertification. If one tree dies, its immeasurable benefits also vanish.

Obviously, pest insects are causing great damage, but ultimately that damage is being caused by human beings. One reason is that the animals and other creatures which feed on the pest insects are being hunted and killed by human beings. Another important reason is that humans are also providing an ideal environment for pest insects to multiply and thrive because of causing global warming.

How do we feel about this problem?

Without question our living environment is getting worse day by day and our food and drinking water supplies are decreasing year by year. So why is everyone so complacent about it?
