21 rivers and wetlands around the lake Ganga are drained up

(Translated by Otgonsuren)

There are around 500 extinct volcanoes in Asia and 118 of them located in Dariganga sum of Sukhbaatar aimag. The mountains named Shiliin bogd and Altan Ovoo, Dari-Uul located in the border of Dariganga and Erdenetsagaan provinces are one of the extinct volcanoes in Mongolian steppe and it is “the land of thousand mountains” by the poetical name.

Shiliin Bogd montain located in 3 kilometers from the border of China. Dari-Uul and Ganga lake are very beautiful places /natural resources /around which there are 21 small rivers provide by the resource of water and in every autumn more than 20 thousand swans visit this lake .

Unfortunately, now there are only three small rivers-Orgikh bulag, Bayanbulag and Kharaat bulag-still exist around Ganga lake while 21 other rivers are drained up.

Today the Ganga lake is eaten by sand 250 meters from south side and the level of water decreased 20-25 meters into the point of the center.

In the summer time a lot of horses stand in the lake and due to horses’ urine and feces the water of lake became dirty and there is not cleansing system.

You can see how the desertification is speeding to the Altan ovoo mountain which is situated at the north side of Dariganga province and eroison by human beings’ and animals’ foot print.

Last summer when the ceremony organized to sacrifice to Altan ovoo, which happens in every four years, I heard that around 100,000 visitor came here to praticipate to the ceremony.

The main symptom of desertification here, long continuous sand streak through the Dariganga province is eating the green stripe in their route.

The dust and sand aroused by the pilgrimage and visitors who is riding on horses or cars is starting big storm while blowing a little wind and the sand is getting into our mouths and eyes.

When I saw the long sand streak through down the mountain, I felt big trouble of the future of this land which was beautiful oasis that once makes Mongolian people joyful during past several centuries, but in the next century it is going to a desert without anyone living there.
